How to Remove Wood Paint From a Deck
- 1). Fill your bucket with water.
- 2). Measure out 2 tbsp. of mild detergent into the water.
- 3). Wash the surface of the deck where you would like to remove the paint, using the sponge and the soapy water.
- 4). Set the fan to blow on the deck and allow it to dry.
- 5). Put on all of your protective clothing. This includes safety goggles or glasses, safety gloves, thick pants, long-sleeved shirt or jacket, and sturdy shoes that cover your entire foot.
- 6). Apply the paint stripper to the deck area where you would like to remove the paint. Use the paint brush to apply the stripper in even strokes, avoiding over-brushing the same area once it has been applied.
- 7). Allow the stripper to dry in accordance with the manufacturer's directions, usually two to six hours. Position the fan to blow on the deck to help speed along the drying process, aiming it away from your home so that it pushes any harmful fumes away from anyone in the house.
- 8). Scrape the paint off of the deck, using the plastic scraper, and disposing of the old paint in the disposable container. The stripper will have loosened the paint on the wood, but you will still need to scrape the majority of the paint off of the deck.
- 9). Wash the deck again using the sponge and soapy water mixture, once you have finished scraping off the paint.

Rinse the deck with a garden hose to get any stray pieces of paint off of your deck, and allow the deck to air dry. Once it is dry, your deck will be ready for a new coat of paint or a wood stain.
