Cleaning Cat Sprayings

    • 1). Absorb as much of the urine as possible using paper towels to wipe solid surfaces or to sop up the liquid from fabric or carpeting.

    • 2). Pour club soda on upholstery or carpeting to saturate it and allow it to sit for 10 minutes to rinse away the urine. Blot the surfaces with paper towels to absorb the water. For carpeting, place a book or other heavy object on the paper towels to weigh them down so they sop up more of the liquid, and allow this to sit overnight.

    • 3). Saturate fabric or carpeting with an enzymatic pet cleaner that digests the organic matter in the urine and eliminates it from fabrics, carpeting and the padding underneath. Place a piece of plastic wrap over the area so it dries more slowly, allowing the enzymes and bacteria to digest more of the urine. This also prevents your cat from returning to the area and mark it again while it dries overnight. Re-saturate the area if smell remains after this treatment, and allow it to dry one more night to eliminate the urine odor.

    • 4). Mix together a solution of 1 quart water and 1 cup vinegar. Soak paper towels with this solution and use it to wipe down the cat urine spray on walls, tile, furniture or wood flooring. Pour the solution onto upholstery and allow it to dry naturally. Use the vinegar solution instead of using an enzymatic cleaner if the enzymatic cleaner has not worked. Pour it into carpet stains to saturate both the carpet and the padding underneath, and allow it to dry overnight. Use this mixture in a carpet cleaning machine to clean the area as well.

    • 5). Remove washable items such as draperies, furniture slipcovers, bedding or clothing and put them in your washing machine. Add 1 cup of vinegar to the wash and run a cycle without detergent, just the vinegar. After this, run one more cycle with just detergent or, if odors remain, add 1/2 cup of vinegar to the detergent. Dry items in the sun to help remove any lingering odors.

    • 6). Sprinkle a mixture of 1 cup baking soda with 10 to 12 drops of lavender over fabrics or carpeting to freshen them overnight. Vacuum away the baking soda the next day. You can also use this mixture as a scrub for stubborn urine stains on solid surfaces when mixed with a little water to form a paste. Rub the mixture on the surface, then rinse with water and wipe it away.
