How to Get Mold Smells Out of Couch Cushions
- 1). Move the couch outdoors onto a slab or patio area to prevent scattering mold spores around the house. Gear up with safety glasses, rubber gloves and an OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration)-certified particle mask.
- 2). Vacuum the whole couch, including the cushions, with the machine's attachment to extract the mold spores. Once finished, discard the vacuum's bag and filter to avoid future contamination.
- 3). Examine the couch's cushions for musty odors. If you still detect mold, prepare a homemade mold-killing mixture of 1 cup warm water and 1 cup rubbing alcohol. Mix the rubbing alcohol solution in a container.
- 4). Moisten a cloth in the mold-killing mixture. Squeeze the moistened cloth to drain out excess liquid. Wipe the barely moist cloth across the couch cushions to kill remaining mold.
- 5). Dampen another cloth in warm water. Squeeze the dampened cloth to release excess liquid. Wipe the barely damp cloth across the couch cushions to rinse off the mold-killing mixture.
- 6). Leave the couch outdoors in a sunny area for five hours to air dry. The sunlight will also kill mold spores.
