How to Fix a Carpet Like New

15

    Stain Removal

    • 1). Remove large stains from the carpet before cleaning the entire carpet. Spray the stain remover over the stains and allow to sit for 5 minutes.

    • 2). Blot or rub the stains with a soft cloth to lift the stain. If the carpet has sticky residue or something else, such as candy, stuck over the surface of the carpet then remove the residue with a butter knife and throw the residue away.

    • 3). Brush the stains if they are still present after the first stain removal application. Use a soft brush to rub the stain loose if it is ground into the carpet. Blot the area dry with a towel.

    Carpet Cleaning

    • 1). Remove all furniture from the room and place it in another room. Vacuum the carpet three times, pushing the vacuum in different directions across the carpet each time.

    • 2). Fill the steam cleaner with hot water and the carpet cleaning solution. Follow the instructions for your model of carpet cleaner. Usually you need to press a button to release the cleaning solution, then the solution along with dirt and water is sucked back into the machine.

    • 3). Continue to go over the carpet with the steamer and the carpet cleaning solution until the water starts to turn clear when it is sucked back up.

    • 4). Go over the surface of the carpet again with the steam cleaner to rinse out any remaining cleaning solution from the carpet fibers. Do not use cleaning solution for the rinse cycle; only water. Allow the floor to dry.

    • 5). Vacuum up any loosened particles. Note any areas where stains remain. Go over these stains again with the stain remover. Blot the stain away.

    Carpet Cutting

    • 1). Note any areas where the carpet is loose, pulling, buckling or ripping along carpet seams.

    • 2). Press pieces of carpet tape between ripped sections of carpet. Press the tape to one side of the carpet, then pinch the other side of the rip together with the taped piece. This will disguise any rips in the carpet.

    • 3). Un-tack one side of the carpet by pulling the carpet up by hand. Wear work gloves to protect your hands from getting pricked. Pull the carpet tightly to restore evenness to the carpet. Tack the carpet back in place with a rubber mallet.
