How to Clean Out Bad Drain Pipe Clogs
- 1). Pour 1/4-cup of household salt, 1/4-cup baking soda and 1/2-cup of white vinegar into the drain. Allow the vinegar and baking soda to bubble and then pour a pot of boiling water directly into the drain. Run hot water for 5 minutes to dissolve the clog.
- 2). Apply a ring of petroleum jelly around the lip of a plunger. Place the plunger over the drain and vigorously pump up and down 12 to 15 times. Run water into the drain. Repeat if the water is not draining freely.
- 3). Feed a plumbing snake into the drain. Jab and push at the clog to poke through and free it. Run water to test drainage.
- 4). Take apart the drain pipes and clear the P-trap, which is the most likely place for a clog to come to rest. Place a bucket under the U-shaped pipe under the sink to catch water and debris. Use a pipe wrench to loosen the large ring around the pipe on each side of the U. Remove the U and push the clog out of the drain. Put the pipe back in place and tighten the large rings with a pipe wrench.
