How to Clean Mold in a Furnace per the EPA

32
    • 1). Dry all areas within the furnace of any accumulated water. Use a shop vac to clean water from within the ducts and furnace. If water is known to accumulate dry the areas at least every two days. Mold begins to form in wet areas within 48 hours.

    • 2). Clean furnace humidifiers weekly. Dry the condensate pans, if necessary. Ideally these pans that accumulate moisture removed from the air by the air conditioner, should automatically drain into a sink or floor drain. If they are not draining completely dry them out and wash with a water and detergent mix. Repair so they drain more efficiently.

    • 3). Turn the furnace off if you suspect mold in the heating unit or the ducts. Operating the furnace while there is mold in the system spreads the mold spores throughout the house.

    • 4). Wash all hard accessible hard surfaces with a water and detergent mix. Dry the surfaces as quickly as possible to prevent mold growth.

    • 5). Call a professional furnace or duct cleaning surface if the mold is suspected to be in places that can't be reached for cleaning by hand.

    • 6). Replace the furnace filter any time mold is suspected in the furnace or the areas surrounding the heating unit.
