Ambiance
Loreley is an oasis of a beer garden, located almost directly under the Brooklyn Queens Expressway in Williamsburg. Though it may not seem like the most ideal location for an outdoor bar, whoever designed this space knew what they were doing: the entire bar is surrounded by a brick wall, giving it an air of secrecy, and the interior, with its large wood tables and brick walls, is warm and inviting.
Outdoors there are several communal picnic tables with umbrellas, shielding you from the sun's rays. The wait staff is friendly, and the crowd is usually subdued.
Sports
Inside the bar, Loreley has a projector screen for major sports events, so pull up a chair and settle in with a beer.
Drinks
All the beer at Loreley is imported from either Germany or Austria. You'll be hard pressed to find another bar anywhere in New York with as large of a selection of German beers as Loreley, although Spuyten Duyvil and Radegast Beer Hall (both in Williamsburg) come close. Draught beers are served in 0.2 liters or 0.4 liter glasses, or, if you're really thirsty, they can be upgraded to the 1 liter Mass Steins. For non-beer drinkers wine and an assortment of whiskey, bourbon and scotch are available as well.
Food
Loreley serves a massive menu of traditional German pub food - for dinner, snacks, or brunch on the weekends. Get a kick out of trying to pronounce the names for these dishes (thankfully there are English explanations for those who don't read German).
Favorites include wiener schnitzel with fries ($16), bratwurst with sauerkraut ($15), or cheese spaetzle with bacon ($15). These specialties and many more are served all day.
For brunch, which is served Saturday and Sunday until 4 p.m., you can get German style eggs benedict for $11, a sausage platter for $16, or German style pancakes for $11. If you are so inclined, Loreley offers a Bloody Mary, Mimosa, or Pimm's Cup for your brunch cocktail.
History
Loreley opened its first location on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in 2003. The city location is larger but not as elegant. The Williamsburg location, which opened in 2010, has a quainter feel to it. The name, Loreley, comes from "the legendary siren who sits on a rock high over the Rhine and lures mariners to their death."
Nearby
Just around the corner on Meeker Avenue and Lorimer Street you'll find Night of Joy, a laid-back with a nice rooftop. If you aren't feeling the German cuisine, head to The Brooklyn Star, on Lorimer, for delicious Texas style food.
