North Beach, San Francisco, is located roughly from Broadway to Lombard and Grant to Taylor street. The area is also called Little Italy as it was once populated by the Italian immigrants from Genoa and Sicily who founded the local fishing industry. Columbus Avenue, North Beach's main thoroughfare, and nearby side streets offer lots of moderately priced family-style Italian restaurants and cafes. The atmosphere is very much Mediterranean.

    Joe DiMaggio's Italian Chophouse

    • The restaurant's polished décor includes deep mahogany walls, plush leather booths, Art Deco chandeliers and hundreds of black-and-white photographs of Joe DiMaggio who grew up in the city. The restaurant offers elegant and upscale dining but the space accommodates all sorts of diners. The booth can easily fit a family of four and the atmosphere is fun.

    Il Pollaio

    • Served with salad and fries or steamed potatoes, the fragrant roast chicken is the Italian Grill Il Pollaio's signature dish. If you are not in the mood for chicken, you can also choose from steak, pork chops, lamb chops, rabbit, and Italian sausages on the grill. The restaurant doesn't serve pasta. This is a very kid-friendly restaurant. Service is efficient and prices are affordable.

    Mario's Bohemian Cigar Store Café

    • This old-fashioned tiny café is a favorite of locals. It serves big, warm focaccia sandwiches filled with meatballs or breaded chicken cutlets, pizzas and salad. There is no back kitchen so you can watch the waitress make your drinks and the food coming out of a big fire oven. You can have a seat at the funky wooden counter or get the sandwiches to go, to enjoy them in Washington Park across the street. Staff is very friendly and efficient.

    Trattoria Contadina

    • The restaurant is not exactly spacious but it has more tables and a more welcoming feel than many eateries on Columbus Street. The food is hearty, and service is very good and family-friendly. The restaurant serves a medley of traditional pastas to creative veal scaloppini, poultry, and seafood. There is no kids' menu but the kitchen will serve up half orders. You can enjoy the delicious food while watching the cable cars pass.

    Naan-N-Curry

    • This is an inexpensive Indian and Pakistani food restaurant. Some dishes can be too spicy for children, but there are plenty of mild and child-friendly dishes such as chicken tikka malsala which is cooked in a mild yogurt sauce. If you are tired of eating pizza and pasta all the time, Naan-N-Curry is really refreshing.
